Making a Million $ Newsletter

Morning Brew, with its almost 3,000,000 subscribers, sold for USD$75,000,000 a few years ago in a record-breaking deal. They were able to do this due to a couple of impressive stats.

Here they are:

  • Open rate of over 40%
  • 15% click-through rate
  • $20M in revenue
  • $6M in profit

But what they did wasn't necessarily groundbreaking.

They're just one of many newsletter media companies that have been catching headlines lately for their impressive acquisitions or revenue numbers.

Morning Brew just implemented a strategy and executed it perfectly.

So why are email newsletters so profitable?

  • Because of how their advertising is priced. For a lot of ads, advertisers pay per impression or click. But with email databases, the common way to pay is per subscriber. This is significant because not all subscribers open an email so not all of them will see the ad or click it. This means you're being paid for just growing a subscriber list.
  • Because of the price advertisers are willing to pay. The average cost per 1,000 subscribers sitting around USD$10-30. This means an email database with 1,000,000 subscribers could get $10,000 - $30,000 per ad and might have 3 ads per email. If you're emailing your list every day, it adds up real quick.
  • Because they're very good at getting people to click through to other places. For us, we don't need to monetize our newsletters with ads (this isn't how we make our money). But we can use our emails to promote our podcasts, social media channels, events we're hosting, books we write, etc.

This is why we've decided to go all in on newsletters this year.

So how are we going to build this database? Great question.

And I won't answer that today. But stay tuned and we'll get into it tomorrow.

Until next time.
