OMG! RapAS is even better than ChatGPT!!!!!!

OMG! RapAS is even better than ChatGPT!!!!!!

I’ve just installed RapAS and I asked it this question.

“I’ve been thinking and reading about AI and ChatGPT. Can you tell me if they are all they’re cracked up to be?”

Here is what it said:

AI and the breakthroughs in functionality of the large language models (LLMs) that power generative language applications are certainly attracting a lot of attention. RapAS is a lot slower, but has recently been on a short, lovely, but horrendously expensive break to Annecy. The expense was caused mainly by lack of advance travel planning on the part of RapAS, which meant Eurostar business class being the only option back from Paris last Saturday evening.

[Note: It appears that machine learning, or learning of any kind, eludes RapAS in some areas, despite the programme running now for over half a century. Still, the long train journey home gave RapAS time to search its own LLMs and consider your question.]

Here are some things you might find helpful in lieu of a definitive answer.

-??????????Humans like to create worlds. And markets. Even if generative applications were of extremely low value, a high value market can still be created. See crypto.

-??????????Saying ‘there will be more losers than winners’ and ‘AI is an existential threat’ is still hyping the market. Anyone with a dog in the fight will want it to sound big, even if, in reality, it’s more ‘business as usual’ tech development.

-??????????The area is a potential bubble because the benefits are not yet clear. Nvidia’s stock has rocketed on speculation of what AI and generative applications might do, more than what they have done.

-??????????There is massive inertia in the way people work. It takes years for new methods to be adopted, even when the business case is clear.

-??????????Humans want to fill their time with activity they deem to have purpose more than they want to be efficient or productive. Work fits the time we give it.?See Parkinson’s Law.

-??????????Tribes need enemies to maintain and strengthen their own identities. AI and ChatGPT may fulfil this role for some.

-??????????Full automation is not possible, but to desire it, or sell the idea of it, is to walk the road to the mad thinking of?The Sovereign Individual. Here, social collapse and fortresses in New Zealand, protected by private armies are seen as inevitable, and even cool. It’s dark and anti-human.

-??????????What Ted Chiang said: The machines we are talking about are not conscious. This is one of the best articles to be published about AI?https://www.ft.com/content/c1f6d948-3dde-405f-924c-09cc0dcf8c84?We want to believe in conscious machines. But there’s no one at the end of the line, and there never will be.

-??????????There is no intelligence in AI. Much of what is said about AI comes from a mistaken (or perhaps brilliant) misnaming. ‘A poor choice of words’ has led to much fascination, fear and dreaming. AA, automated analysis, is more accurate. See?The Chinese Room.

-??????????Business titans and politicians have no choice but to talk about AI and transformation, but for different reasons. RapAS has no idea if Rishi Sunak understands what AI is, but past a certain point, he must talk about it using the prevailing language. The LLMs around AI have gained unstoppable momentum, as it were.

-??????????AI will never write a good novel. Anything interesting contains novelty. As generative AI is analysis of the sum of what has come before, not what is new and interesting, it is forever hobbled in this department. Thankfully.

RapAS hopes you have found this helpful and recommends booking train travel in advance.

Is 'RapAS' degenerate AI? Asking for a friend. Tonnes of good points in here. Maybe too many for a single post. (What were you thinking?) I especially love our ongoing hope against hope, as humans, for that sci-fi flavour of AI - whether a HAL, Data or something else. Artificial general intelligence - is the generative AI we now use a step on the way to that, or a fork on the road that leads us to... where exactly?
