Oman’s biggest PET recycling project is slated for launch in the third quarter of this year, potentially unlocking an effective and sustainable solution to the longstanding problem of plastic waste ending up in landfills across the country.
The strategically significant project, offering a processing capacity of around 200 metric tonnes per day, is proposed to be established at a suitable location in North Al Batinah Governorate, within easy proximity of Sohar Port.
Spearheading the project’s implementation is Green Muscat Investment and Development Company, a Muscat-based enterprise with expertise encompassing circular economy solutions. A specialist in polymer compounding, Green Muscat focuses on research, development, production, and supply of high-quality polymeric materials and fiberglass mesh. The company also specializes in polymer compounding, offering solutions in HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, PP, PVC, PET, and recycled polymers.
According to Dr Yasha Vassell, founder and CEO of Green Muscat, the state-of-the-art facility will, on the one hand, dramatically reduce plastic waste, and on the other, meet the growing global demand for recycled PET flakes.? Eco-friendly PET flakes are used across various industries, including packaging and textiles.
“With an expected capacity of up to 200 MT/day and a strong ROI projection of 30-38% annually, this venture offers both environmental impact and financial returns. We are currently seeking investors to join us in this exciting project,” he noted in a post.
Plastic waste as raw material for the project will come from two key sources: Imports from mainly the Indian subcontinent and the wider Gulf region, as well as a national collection-based system covering initially major cities, and eventually rolled out to cover the entire country. The latter option will also support SME development and employment generation, he said.
A site in Muscat has been identified for the aggregation of all kinds of plastic waste, before it is sorted, baled and transported to the plant site.
As for plant machinery, much of the hardware for the project is already on order with the overall project proposed to be developed in phases, he added.
