The Olympics: an Organizational Masterpiece

The Olympic Games have evolved through the ages but at the core, athletes compete every 4 years for the ultimate prize, the olive wrath (Olympic medal) and the return as heroes flying their countries flag. Going back to the history books the first Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. The games were dedicated to the 12 Olympian Gods and were hosted on the ancient green plains of Olympia, the place was famous for its magnificent great temples of the two gods Zeus and his wife Hera. The games initially had a very religious character combined with several ancient sports events, many of which were based on ancient Greek mythology.

As the Olympics developed, so did the procedures such as the standard schedule of the events and the Olympic Truce. Wars would stop, truces would be upheld and safe passage to all competitors would be granted.

All participants would gather and compete showing their physical qualities and enforcing the relationship between various Greek cities. Olympia, the hosting city would transform to a mosaic of colourful insignias, sponsors would showcase their champions and their hosts would try to make their stay enjoyable. It was a well-organised sporting event, that catered for the athletes at every level.

After the revival of the Olympic Games by the French Baron Pierre de Coubertin in the late 19th century, the games took the shape that we know today. Every 4 years the summer Olympic games would take place in a different country and the event organising would fall on to them. Nowadays millions of dollars are spent from opening ceremonies to sporting venues. Each country competes for the last one in creativity. All designed to capture the world’s eye for a fortnight and showcase their country.


The organisers tap into the knowledge wealth of hospitality professionals and volunteers across all sectors. Tourism, catering, accommodations, and event logistics all become essential to the success of the games. The Games lift the profile of the country, and the investment would yield results in the post-game era. Every country would enjoy an influx of visitors that would support the economy. Investments would take place and jobs would increase. Inevitably, success would lie in the skills of the people. To sustain the growth people need to be trained in their fields and pass on knowledge to the next generation.

In the light of the recent events in Ukraine, the words of Nelson Mandela carry significant weight

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down barriers” — Nelson Mandela?????????

My hope is that athleticism can once again be the torch that will show the way to peace.
