2024 Paris Olympics - Construction and Sustainability

  • Sustainable Construction and Infrastructure: The Paris 2024 Olympic Village utilizes both new and existing commercial infrastructure, prioritizing sustainable and accessible design. Only 5% of facilities were newly constructed, with the rest being temporary or renovated using low-carbon techniques.
  • Legacy Housing and Facilities: Post-Games, the Olympic Village will be converted into 2,500 homes, a student residence, a hotel, and mixed-use spaces, addressing Paris’ housing crisis and promoting long-term community benefits.
  • Transportation Improvements: The Olympics accelerated the completion of Line 14 on the Grand Paris Express, improving transportation links between Saint-Denis Pleyel and Paris-Orly Airport, which will benefit residents and visitors beyond the event.
  • Environmental Initiatives: Sustainability measures include geothermal energy installations, the use of cardboard beds, and minimal air conditioning. The Games are dubbed “the first in the recycling age” for their green initiatives.
  • Economic and Social Impact: The redevelopment of Saint-Denis, inspired by the Olympics, aims to revitalize the area economically and socially, despite concerns about displacement of existing residents and the long-term vacancy rates of new office spaces.

Olympics 2024 - Constructing Olympic Village

  • Cost and Scale: The Olympic Village, the largest single-site construction project in France, costs $1.85 billion and spans 330,000 square meters across Saint-Ouen, Saint-Denis, and L’Ile-Saint-Denis. It houses 82 buildings for 15,000 Olympic and 8,000 Paralympic athletes.
  • Post-Games Repurposing: After the Olympics, the Village will be transformed into a residential, commercial, and office complex, with buildings designed for minimal refits to maintain sustainability, expected to be completed by 2025.
  • Innovative and Green Technologies: The Village incorporates low-carbon concrete, wood, recycled materials, and renewable energy sources like solar panels. Experiments with new green technologies, such as seashell sidewalks for rainwater absorption and cooling, are also underway.
  • Efficient and Low-emission Construction Practices: The use of offsite-manufactured elements, transport of materials by barges, and construction techniques that reduce carbon emissions by 50% contributed to the Village's green credentials. Many buildings use wood and low-carbon concrete to minimize environmental impact.

Great article. Interesting to see the relative price tag difference for the Olympic Village (1.75 billion for about 80 acres) and the development in Chicago (7 billion for 55 acres) is that just down to the type of development?
