OLYMPIC TRAUMATOLOGY

OLYMPIC TRAUMATOLOGY

PT - Tradu??o

The Olympics have barely started, and the terror of any athletic committee is injuries, ruptures, and bone fractures in top form. It is undeniable that the Olympic generation from any part of the world is in their best physical shape. These athletes eat well, sleep well, and train constantly. Surely, their biological condition is optimal; their sugar and carbohydrate levels are low or average. Ah, but don’t be fooled!

There are sports that demand something extra from the athlete, and know that skateboarding is my passion and one of those demanding sports.

After all, spinning 2.5 times in the air two meters off the ground seems impossible, but it is possible, and fortunately, our Brazilian fairy got through Paris 2024 trauma-free. Phew... not this time, doctors; the need for a titanium plate was avoided!

Although I love this sport, I have no fear in saying that it causes many traumas for its practitioners (wear helmets!). If you are new to the sport and have no idea of the pain these athletes go through, think about how it would feel to get hit hard on the shin with a hammer. Felt the pain? Exactly, a skateboard deck on the shin is equivalent to a hammer hit on the shin, and surely, if you've been through that, you know what I'm talking about.

But the fantastic world of traumatology can come into play at any moment, and rest assured, dear reader, they are prepared to receive patients from various types of sports: BMX, cycling, gymnastics, weightlifting, volleyball, and even surfing. Know that surfers are competing in these Olympics in French Polynesia, on one of the most challenging waves on the planet, called Teahupoo, in Tahiti. I had the opportunity to visit this place in 2014 when Gabriel Medina won his first world championship. But I confess I didn't go there to see the championship, but rather the wave, with its incredible power and natural beauty! Speaking of Medina, did you see what he did? He scored a 9.90 on a fantastic wave, and I dare say it will be the best photo of these Olympics.

Back to the point... If you have no idea of the danger of this wave, imagine jumping into a shallow pool from a height of 5 meters. Can you imagine? The risk of hitting the coral reef is very high.

During these Olympic days, let's keep an eye on the games and the possible traumas. Observe the doctors attending to the athletes and see how the cases are resolved because accidents happen. Every time someone shouts "ouch," you will remember this text because trauma is among us. Now, let's avoid it!
