Near Collision: Two Olympic AT42s Near Athens; TCAS Coordinates Safe Separation
On August 7th, 2023, two Olympic Air Avions de Transport Regional ATR-42-600s came close to each other about 30nm southeast of Athens, Greece. Aircraft SX-OAY, flight OA-18 from Athens to Naxos, and SX-OAZ, flight OA-25 from Milos to Athens, both at 9000 feet, received TCAS advisories directing OA-18 to descend and OA-25 to climb. ADS-B data showed they were on intersecting paths at the same altitude; at their closest, they were 600 feet vertically and 2.5nm horizontally apart, eventually increasing the vertical gap to 700 feet at a 1.3nm horizontal distance. FAA Expands UPS Drone Flight Permissions
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has authorized UPS Flight Forward, UPS's drone delivery subsidiary, to conduct longer distance deliveries using SwissDrones SVO 50 V2 drones beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS) without ground spotters. This decision allows for a broader scope of package deliveries, potentially benefiting other drone delivery companies like Wing, FedEx, and Zip. In addition to UPS, the FAA has granted BVLOS flight permissions to uAvionix Corp. and infrastructure inspection firm Phoenix Air Unmanned. Click image above for reading the full The Verge article!
Huntsville Cessna Crash: Father-Son Pilot Team Identified
At the Huntsville Municipal Airport, Texas, a Cessna 150K crashed on Wednesday afternoon during a flying practice, resulting in the deaths of both occupants: pilot Elijah Bishop and his co-pilot son, Ethan Bishop. One individual succumbed to injuries at the crash site, and the other en route to the hospital. The Federal Aviation Administration is spearheading the investigation into the cause of the accident.
