Now is the time to look back on the memorable moments from the Olympics that have warmed the hearts of many around the world. Africa has started breaking boundaries in sports, showing their capabilities on the world stage.
The Legendary Moments
It has been quite an entertaining time for sports lovers, and African athletes have been doing their utmost best to make their continent proud. The first medal for Africa came from the South African Springbok Sevens rugby team, as they clinched bronze with their victory over Australia at Stade de France.
Kaylia Nemour became the first ever Algerian and African gymnast to win a medal as she became the gymnastics champion on uneven bars. "It really is my lifelong dream," Nemour said following her gold medal triumph. "It's been a goal since 2020. Even I had my doubts before I stepped on the bar, I told myself it wasn't possible that I'd be Olympic champion. And I passed, it was incredible."
Another standout performer was South Africa’s Tatjana Smith who competed in her last Olympic Games but did so with a bang. She took home a gold medal in the women’s 100m breaststroke and silver in the 200m race from the same category.
“I am just grateful to have the opportunity to end my career in this way. I couldn’t be happier!” said the 27-year-old about her achievements. “I’m excited to in the future tell my kids I used to swim there [Olympics]. I am just grateful that I can walk away with medals. It is any athlete’s dream. Achievements eventually fall away but you want to be remembered for the person you are and what you bring to people”.

The continent can also boast medals in fencing, seeing that Egypt’s Mahmoud Elsayad won bronze in the men’s epee individual and Fares Ferjani Tunisia won silver in the men’s sabre individual. And of course, with the Africa Cup of Nations tournament from earlier this year still fresh in the minds of many around the world, plenty was expected from the football teams to perform.
The bronze medal match in the Men’s Football Tournament is an all-African affair with Egypt and Morocco going up against each other for the prize. This match will guarantee either nation their very first Olympic medal in the beautiful game.
South Sudan’s men’s basketball team are also contributors to the continent's success at the Olympic Games in Paris since they made their first appearance in the world event. On top of that, they won their first-ever game when they defeated Puerto Rico 90-79 on 28 July, creating jubilation for their people. There are many more medals to be won as the Olympics draw to a close, and as things stand there’s still a chance for Africa to increase their medal tally.
