OLD STUDENTS, NEW IMPACT: CHANGING LIVES BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Alumni Challenge
a non-profit organization whose mandate is to inspire and ignite alumni to have a tangible impact on their former school
March 8, 2025 – St. Mary’s Girls, Igoji
On a day dedicated to celebrating International Women’s Day, the Alumni of St. Mary’s Girls - Igoji came together in a remarkable display of mentorship, scholarship, and networking, reinforcing their commitment to giving back to their Alma Mater.
Led by Alumni Chairperson, Charity Munyori, the event saw the activation of the four key pillars of alumni engagement, with the highlight being the presentation of a Ksh. 636,000 scholarship cheque to support 12 bright but financially disadvantaged students. This initiative, a culmination of months of fundraising, underscores the power of alumni in bridging educational gaps and ensuring access to quality education for deserving students.
A Day of Mentorship and Empowerment
The mentorship pillar took center stage as alumni professionals engaged students in thought-provoking discussions on mental health, personal growth, decision-making, and character development. Experts from diverse fields—including law, medicine, banking, and administration—shared their experiences, offering students practical insights and guidance on career development and navigating life beyond school.
The interactive sessions provided a platform for students to ask pressing questions, gaining perspectives that would shape their aspirations and ambitions. The mentorship committee, composed of accomplished alumnae, delivered compelling presentations, reinforcing the importance of resilience, discipline, and self-belief.
Strengthening Networks and Building Bridges
The event also fostered valuable networking opportunities, bringing together alumni, students, and educators. The diversity of professions represented—from engineers to corporate leaders—served as an inspiration to the students, demonstrating the potential that exists beyond the classroom.
Engagement with school leadership, including Principal Mrs. Mutwiri, Deputy Mrs. Kimotho, and Scholarship Coordinator Mr. Mwirigi, further reinforced the shared commitment to student success. The teachers, deeply invested in the welfare of their learners, actively participated in discussions, ensuring that mentorship efforts aligned with the school’s vision for academic and personal excellence.
Beyond Scholarships: The Social Impact of Alumni Involvement
Beyond the scholarship and mentorship efforts, the social pillar emphasized the broader role of alumni in shaping their Alma Mater. Whether through financial contributions, sharing career wisdom, or dedicating time for mentorship, the event showcased the power of alumni in creating meaningful change.
The event also highlighted the dedication of the school’s administration, whose support has been instrumental in fostering strong alumni-school relations. Their willingness to engage and collaborate with alumni has paved the way for sustained initiatives that continue to uplift students long after they leave the school gates.
A Legacy of Giving Back
As the event concluded, one thing was evident—the role of alumni in shaping the future of their schools and communities cannot be overstated. The success of this gathering demonstrated how structured alumni engagement can translate into tangible impact, whether through financial aid, mentorship, or career exposure.
With the Alumni Challenge’s guiding principle to Connect, Empower, and Inspire, the gathering at St. Mary’s Girls - Igoji served as a powerful example of what is possible when alumni remain actively involved in giving back to the institutions that shaped them.
As the students continue their academic journey, the influence of their alumni remains a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding them that their dreams are valid, and their potential is limitless.
