A Deeper Dive - Generation Z and Baby Boomers…

Much has been written about how different Generation Z is than older generations. However, an interesting effect was noted in research by ThinkLab.

On a number of questions, Gen Z reflected the views of Boomers more than Millennials and Gen X. This reverse correlation was dubbed by the research team as ‘the boomerang effect.’

In these cases, the chart looked something like the following:

When Data Defies Stereotypes

For example, contrary to popular belief, Generation Z wants in-person face time to build relationships more than any other generation. They are also more likely to prefer in-person work arrangements, as discussed before in this newsletter. (iHire)

Here are a few examples where Gen Z had more in common with Boomers than Gen X or Millennials:

  • Gen Z and Boomers are more likely than Millennials and Gen X to prefer a synchronous approach when they have a project-related question.

  • Gen Z and Boomers are more likely to believe that their personal time outside of work is respected by employers.

  • Gen Z and Boomers are more likely to find opportunities in the gig economy appealing.

These data points are not conclusive in any way but they do suggest that we are all still trying to figure out what Gen Z values most.

What I’m Reading

Hunting El Chapo: The Inside Story of the American Lawman Who Captured the World's Most Wanted Drug-Lord - Andrew Hogan and Douglas Century?

This firsthand account of one DEA agent's efforts to capture El Chapo are fascinating. One of the most concerning sentiments that this book left me with the extent to which bureaucratization and interdepartmental politics undermine the prosecutorial efforts of different Federal agencies. These are our tax dollars at work! ??
