Old school Automotive Service Technician enters present day
Old school automotive service technician is defined as:
When you had a problem with your vehicle, you went to see your friendly neighborhood “Mechanic”
You as the vehicle owner would as best you could describe the issue.
This description could be:
1). My car is acting weird, it sounds like it is breathing 2). My car stops every 145 kilometers.
3). My car will not start when cold outside.
I will add an acronym for “Friendly Neighborhood Service Technician “: Mechanic The mechanic will then ask to meet your car, you know, get to know the car, of course once This process has occurred once, the car introduction to the mechanic has occurred.
So, the next meeting will be like 2 friends getting together to talk about ‘my problem’.
Additional note: the car may reveal that it does not have a problem, my owner does.
Well, all part of the mechanics problem solving process.
Once the introduction has occurred and the owner has revealed the problem, the mechanic will complete the next step:
Now this is actual real life, as I am an old school Mechanic.
The mechanic will touch, smell, see and listen to the Car.
Through this direct communication between the car and the mechanic, this information enters the mechanics brain, this information is filter through the many years of training, experience and personal insight comes up with A preliminary diagnosis.
!). My car is acting weird, it sounds like it is breathing
- confirmed repair: gasket leak on the carburetor (this is the unit that mixed the air and fuel together)
2). My car stops every 145 kilometers
- on board computer internal fuel injection control overloads and shuts down for 20 minutes, then works for another 145 kilometers 3). My car will not start when cold outside
- car using a carburetor, the carburetor uses a choke that restricts the air flow into the carburetor, causing the more fuel and less air, Term is fuel enrichment, needed because the air when cold is denser thereby to achieve the 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio, the carburetor choke Does its job.
There is also a part of the carburetor called a choke pull off, that when the gas pedal is pushed all the way down while cranking, a mechanical device “pulls off the choke” to override if flooding occurs (too much fuel”
This issue turned out to be the operator, when the car was started, the operator would push the gas pedal all the way down, thus overriding the choke, thus the needed fuel enrichment did not occur.
So, the moral of this story, as a registered master mechanic, years of experience, training and an amazing insight into ground level customer service experience.
How does this person present all this into getting a job, a career that will utilize everything this person has to offer?
I decided to put this to print based on a recent topic (Urgently needed with 3 to 5 years experience in) also (Over trained) So how does a person with this level of training, experience and insight present themselves to the work place.
As it turns out I now work for Nilfisk
Nilfisk was looking for “Attitude and Aptitude “, once this person was found had the training in place to bring this person’s level of Training, experience and insight from the automotive field into the cleaning industry.
And I have not looked back.
So, to make a long story short
“Yes, those amazing companies are out there”
Thank you
