Old School AI Technology

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly evolved and integrated into various aspects of our lives, transforming the way we interact with technology. From voice assistants to autonomous vehicles, AI has become a big part of modern day innovation. In this blog post, we will explore some technology that we are all familiar with, and examine how long they have been infused with AI.

Voice Assistants (2011-Present): One of the most prominent examples of AI integration is voice assistants. If you have ever said the word "Siri, Hey Google Assistant, or Alexa," you have been using AI. These technologies have become everyday companions, answering our questions, playing the new Drake single, and controlling our homes smart devices. The earliest voice assistant, Siri, was introduced by Apple in 2011, marking the beginning of the AI revolution that would shape the future of human-computer interaction.

Recommendation Systems (1990s-Present): Recommendation systems have become essential in providing personalized suggestions for various products, services, and content. They leverage AI algorithms to analyze user preferences and behavior, enabling platforms like Netflix to offer you the perfect show, Amazon to offer you everything you would ever want and things you didn't know you want, YouTube to take you down your custom rabbit hole of information, and Spotify to get your perfect playlist. Don't even get me started on Meta and Twitter. Although recommendation systems have been in use since the 1990s, advancements in AI have significantly enhanced their accuracy and effectiveness over the years.

Autonomous Vehicles (2004-Present): Self-driving cars are on the verge of transforming transportation, offering a glimpse into a future where roads are filled with intelligent vehicles. While the idea of autonomous vehicles has been around for decades, significant advancements in AI, machine learning, and sensor technology have accelerated their development. Companies like Tesla, Waymo, and Uber have invested heavily in AI research to create safer and more efficient transportation options.

Virtual Personal Assistants (2003-Present): Virtual personal assistants, also known as chatbots or virtual agents, provide automated customer support and assistance across various industries. These AI-powered programs use natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to understand and respond to user queries. IBM's Watson, introduced in 2010, marked a significant milestone in virtual assistant technology, opening doors to more sophisticated conversational agents.

Smart Home Devices (2014-Present): Smart home devices equipped with AI capabilities have revolutionized our living spaces. Devices like smart thermostats, security systems, and lighting controls utilize AI algorithms to learn user behavior, optimize energy consumption, and provide enhanced security. The rise of platforms like Google Home and Amazon Echo has further expanded the AI-powered smart home ecosystem, enabling voice control and seamless integration between devices.

We are at an inflection point with AI. So far our experience with AI has been mostly integrated into personal products and entertainment. The next wave of AI innovation will involve us interfacing directly with AI and collaborating in a more independent way. It will be interesting to see what innovations will come from AI, I am hopeful that a lot of the future innovations will be fun and positive for humanity.
