Old Dog, Old Tricks – Heck you don’t think we can learn anything new do you?

Old Dog, Old Tricks – Heck you don’t think we can learn anything new do you?

There is a paradigm shift in the technology world and the tectonic plates are lifting some folk up and sending others tumbling into the abyss. Echoing in these valleys we can still hear the wizened declaring what worked for them…

A career in IT they said; go forth young people and feed your small creatures from the bounty of a life’s work in IT. Then all the CSI shows hit TV and young folk did what young folk do when playing soccer, they rioted off in a different direction. Standing at the podium a wise man sighed as the dust settled and only old folk were left listening. We adapt as we always have, to an environment of change. Fewer and fewer folk are needed to do what we all did before anyway.

So what, if us old codgers wither wane and die, and the internet crumbles in our wake!

SHUT UP

I was in a group chat on Facebook when a young blustery CCIE started dissing some old fogies who left Cisco recently. Who they were is not important, it was the dissing that unnerved me. Some brazen young guy actually had the nerve to imply that the discoveries of my day were not important and needed to be replaced. Sure HE had a gripe, but no bite; no idea of what to replace old stuff with; so shut up. We need solutions to an ever changing workplace, a place where the evolving solutions are overtaking us. (I deleted his comments in my 13,000 member Facebook group, they hurt my eyes)

What solutions are we most afraid of?

The ones that reduce the hands needed to get stuff done, you know the technical stuff that used to keep pocket protectors filled? There is a need for really smart folks these days, and it seems the new barometer, the social media acting as karaoke machine to the world, has left us wondering how the grey matter survives the self-dumbing down of our human race. Really, we are doing it to ourselves, no? Get your act together kids, can you feel our pain!!

Less hands at work does not mean amputating any upper appendages, it means you are no longer needed; either hand. Make yourself indispensable, it is still possible even in 2016.

Oh yes it is, it’s not that hard to do.

In Texas, my mecca, there had been a draught for like 25 years, then suddenly it started raining, it has not stopped for very long in between downpours, but total accumulations are uncertain since most of that stuff got washed away into the Gulf of Mexico, heck where’s that wall when you need it most?! My reason for sharing this is that technologies hit hard when they get unleashed just like them Texas gulley washers. Contractors, PMs, Implementation Folks, and architects pitch tents and raise the carnival for as long as it takes. Integrators are where you can hang your hat. VARs are selling, designing, supporting, and selling yet again, what your career thrives on.

Technology for the modern age is in the trusted hands of VARs, our clients are the best purveyors of career boosting goods.

What do we have for you? I thought I’d never ask!

HP SIEM experts, VMware certified folks, CCIEs, Collaboration folks, Wireless Architects and Engineers for local travel around NJ, Tivoli, AS400 JDE (yeah I know that’s like fossilized), Cisco Firewall Pros, HPE Inventory Management Systems, Pre-Sales Architects, Post-Sales Engineers, Microsoft Server Experts, and Technology Sales Professionals.

So you wanna career or what?!
