Business Advice: EBITDA --What is it?
Ebitda might sounds like an exotic dish served up in an East Asian restaurant, but if you watch any business television shows you may know that EBITDA is actually a business term.
The idea is to have a uniform way to look at all businesses to make better judgments about what kinds of profits they have instead of hiding them the way bean counters like to do. EBITDA means "Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization." It's a financial metric that allows for a more standardized comparison of companies' profitability by stripping away the effects of financing, accounting, and tax decisions.
EBITDA helps investors and analysts assess a business's operational performance, as it focuses on the core earnings generated by its operations. By excluding interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, EBITDA offers a clearer picture of a company's cash flow and financial health.
EBITDA isn't the only metric you can use to evaluate your business or a business you are looking to purchase, but it is one that makes easy sense. If you are interested in seeing some examples of EBITDA in action and hearing about how it can be used in your business let me know and I'll write something up!
