Business Advice: Utilize Underpriced Attention (Social Media)

If you've ever seen a Gary Vee talk, you know Social Media is the most underpriced attention you can find anywhere. In today's digital landscape, small businesses must leverage social media effectively to attract customers, partners, and employees. While this might seem challenging initially, it's essential to understand that success comes from being authentic, engaging, and locally focused. In this "Business Advice" section, I will tell you what I'm doing to make the most of my social media presence and build lasting connections with people like you.

  1. Finding the right target audience: I struggled to identify the right target audience when I first started. Over time, I realized that understanding what my customers truly wanted, rather than what I wanted them to want, was the key to success. Take the time to talk to your customers and learn about their needs and preferences. Use this information to create buyer personas and tailor your social media content accordingly.
  2. Emphasizing localized content: As the demand for local content grows, small businesses in Oklahoma need to create content that resonates with the local community. There are several ways to do this, and I've yet to settle on a single option, but I've been thinking about podcasts and video interviews. I will also feature any local (aka Oklahoma) based businesses in this newsletter. By focusing on local content, you'll be better positioned to capture people's attention in your area.
  3. Building relationships through authenticity: Big media is falling short, and people are increasingly looking to connect with local content creators who live real lives and engage with their followers directly. I interact with my audience by responding to comments, participating in relevant online discussions, and sharing behind-the-scenes moments. Being authentic and engaging will foster stronger relationships with your customers, partners, and potential employees.
  4. Avoiding automation and outsourcing: While it might seem convenient, it can quickly alienate the people you wish to serve. People want to interact with real individuals who are genuinely invested in them. Keep your social media presence interactive and personal, and avoid automating or outsourcing content creation. Maintaining an authentic connection with your audience is crucial for long-term success.

To attract the right customers, partners, and employees on social media, I'm focusing on understanding my target audience, creating localized content, building authentic relationships, and avoiding automation and outsourcing.

Remember, when your audience realizes your content is automated or outsourced, you are not paying attention. At that point, your audience has every reason to stop paying attention to you.

Oklahoma Business News Roundup

  • According to MSN1, Oklahoma's fight against pro-environmental policies may be hurting its business recruitment efforts, as many of the corporations the state is trying to attract are embracing green initiatives. The article cites examples of how Oklahoma has opposed federal regulations on emissions, water quality, and renewable energy sources.
  • The Oklahoman2 reported that Oklahoma's regulatory agency for marijuana denied license renewal to a 'ghost-owned' cannabis business and is investigating dozens more. The agency said these businesses violate state law without proper ownership disclosures and accountability.
  • MSN3 also featured a story about how Reba McEntire's partnership with the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma helped save a 'dying' city. Reba and the tribe collaborated to build a casino resort in Durant, which created thousands of jobs and boosted the local economy. The project was a 'pipe dream' for McEntire, who grew up nearby.
