OK Boomer

OK Boomer

I have a confession to make. I struggled for some time to understand the gen z and millennial work ethic (boomer here). In perusing the internet it seems to be common for the generations to be at odds regarding work, technology, humor and life in general. There are distinct stereotypes for each generation, and I'll be the first to admit that some of the stereotypical points assigned to baby boomers fit me to a tee. I have at alternate times been grouchy, judgmental and unaccepting of the younger generations approach to the work environment. I found myself saying "back in my day" far too frequently. I decided at some point to take up a different perspective and adapt or become irrelevant.

Business culture has changed drastically over the years. The traditional 9-5 work week is no longer the norm, and businesses are having to adapt to the ever-changing landscape. One of the biggest changes has been the rise of the millennial generation.

  • Millennials: Born between 1981 and 1996, and they are now the largest generation in the workforce. Often stereotyped as being entitled, lazy, and self-absorbed, but they are also incredibly tech-savvy and entrepreneurial.
  • Gen Z: Generation that follows millennials, born between 1997 and 2012. This generation is even more connected than their predecessors, thanks to the rise of social media and mobile technology. They are also more diverse, with a greater understanding of social issues.
  • Boomers: The generation that preceded millennials, born between 1946 and 1964. This generation is often thought of as being more traditional and set in their ways, but they are also incredibly hard-working and resourceful.

I have to say that I work in a wonderful, diverse atmosphere. Meaning more specifically that I am vastly outnumbered by millennials and gen z's. I've learned a lot about acceptance of other generations views. My definitions of many things have been challenged. But that's what it boils down to - my definition. Was my definition intrinsically right? Can't there be other definitions?

I like to think that I'm flexible (for a boomer) and have gradually come around to seeing that our differences are maybe a good thing. That each generation has something to offer the ones before and the ones after. As businesses continue to evolve, it is important to understand the different generations that make up their workforce. By understanding the unique characteristics of each generation, businesses can create a culture that appeals to all employees.?

Do you think that businesses are doing a good job of adapting to the changing workforce while still honoring the more traditional demographic? What can be done to improve the working environment for all employees? Tell me what you think and throw in what generation you identify with!
