Oh, Those Career Conundrums
A friend once asked me if he should stay in a familiar but stagnant job or pursue new opportunities that would potentially offer growth and advancement. He’d been at his company for more than five years and reached an impasse. The organization’s structure didn’t allow for much upward movement and the salary wasn’t very competitive, but the culture and the people were great.
He ended up interviewing at different kinds of companies, some large and some small. After each interview he asked himself the same question: How can I guarantee the new company will be as good of a fit—even if it pays me more?
It took three months of deep thinking and reflecting, but my friend eventually decided to stay at his current employer, working in a different department. The lateral movement came with a slight raise, too. So far, he’s happy with his choice.
Tough decisions are an inevitable part of any career journey, and they often require careful consideration and courage to navigate. Whether you’ve recently graduated and are deciding what career path to choose or you’re iffy about taking on a people management role, you will need to make hard decisions from time to time.
For example, deciding whether to leave an organization that no longer aligns with your values or career goals can be agonizing. Having to relaunch your career after a break can be hard, too. Another challenging decision is when you’ve left a job to find better opportunities but then realize your old job was a better fit. How do you negotiate a job with your former employer?
Each of these scenarios necessitates weighing the potential risks and rewards, making thoughtful, well-considered choices, and sometimes, having hard conversations with yourself and others. Seeking help from a mentor or someone with more experience can ease some of the stress.
Here is some advice from our experts on how to navigate difficult career decisions.
