I moved the garbage can in my kitchen and this happened…
I spent the next week throwing garbage on the floor where the garbage can used to be??
I used to believe that I made all of my decisions after careful, rational consideration until I learned that most of my decisions that impacted my future were made from the daily habits I had developed.
Most if which I was not aware of.
If you don’t believe me, go ahead and test it for yourself. I dare you??
Let’s use my kitchen garbage can as an example. Every morning I get up plug in the kettle and get my coffee ready.
No judgement required I use a packet of sweetener and instant coffee. I open the sweetener packet, empty it into my ‘Grandma’ mug and throw the packet in the garbage.
Since I moved the garbage can every morning I find myself turning to throw this packet into the garbage can where it used to be.
Because it is a ‘Habit’ that developed because I had repeated a behaviour over and over again and my brain, the most powerful computer on the planet using its program called automaticity took over and helped me do this without even thinking.
The good news is you can use this same powerful program to install new habits that lead to you winning at work especially at performance review time!
You might be saying but Tammy you don’t understand.
But I do understand. I spent the a huge part of my early working days working hard and feeling overlooked, undervalued and not recognized. Until I learned to change the way I played the working game, to stop following the same old advice and take charge of my success.
3 Win at Work Habit Hacks that you can put into play today:
1.???? The First Thought-If you wake up every morning and your first thought as your alarm shatters the silence of your sleep is ‘Oh no it’s a work day’ you are stuck in a bad habit. You know the saying as you start your day you will finish it.
?Now you may not like your job but you can replace this ‘first though’ with a new one that serves you to win at work. I have trained my brain that my first thought as I wake from sleep is ‘thank you I am alive’.
Find something that your ‘work’ does for you and an easy place to start is it gives you a magic money deposit into your bank account every 2 weeks. If you stay in the feel bad first thought it becomes a habit and you remain stuck because to change happens when you feel good.
2.??? Not Recognized- Stop waiting for someone else outside of you to recognize your worth. We have been conditioned to believe that our boss will pave the way to our success and this is a myth. Think about it most leaders were promoted because they were good at their technical skills and then we expect them to be everything to all people. Like that is going to happen.
Today start a success journal and write down your 2 successes and how they have contributed to the success of your department or the company. This will teach you how to articulate your value. Facts not Feelings. If you don't believe in your own value how can you expect other people to recognize it.
?3.???? The Promotion- Refer to number 2 first and when you have the promotion conversation come prepared with facts. I have reduced expenses by 20% saving the company $2,000. Be specific. I have conducted, written, approved and sat in on 1000’s of performance reviews and most people are not prepared.
Don't get mad because this may be you but if you articulate your value with 'feelings' like I work hard, I'm the first one in and last one out as examples it will not help you win at work.
Finally, if you are told ‘NO’ to a raise or promotion, say I accept your no but can you give me a clear path to a YES? If the other person can not outline a path to a yes this is a red flag for you and it may be time to look for other opportunities. Not every job will be your dream job!
?The bad news is that all roads lead back to you and the good news is that all roads lead back to you!
If there is one lesson I learned as I look back on my career from the stock room floor to the boardroom table is that I spent too much time ‘waiting’ for my boss to recognize me and promote me until I learned that I could take charge of that!
If you follow the crowd you will end up in the crowd. The traditional advice of how to win at work isn’t working! If it was, we wouldn’t have 80% of people report that they are unhappy at work and only 1% of us achieving our highest earning potential!
I believe in You!

1 周In my 40 years of Corporate life, I noticed the same things happening again and again - to women. I work hard and my boss doesn’t even notice. I’m picking up the slack from co-workers who don’t do their job and never face any consequences. I’ve been told year after year that my turn for a promotion was coming but it hasn’t arrived yet. I think attitudes like these towards female employees are so common that we've stopped realizing that we are being systematically discriminated against. Do these problems happen to men - yes, they probably do, but I'm quite certain that it is mostly women experiencing these things. I think we need to start pushing back and being more vocal about unconscious bias against women. I experienced these exact same issues, while the lone male in our department did a disproportionately low amount of work while receiving a disproportionately high amount of the rewards. I called it out to management and told them very clearly if they didn't correct the situation that I would take early retirement (basically I quit, but I was eligible for retirement). And they LET me do it, but the joke was on them - they had to replace me with 3 people and I'm relaxing and enjoying my freelancer life!
