Oh, the Brilliant [Business] Ideas you'll Find in Things that Make you Mad!
Patricia Bottero, MBA
I help fed-up employees & individuals considering building or buying a purpose-driven and profitable business with early-stage research and planning BEFORE launching any business and before quitting a job.
There is nothing madder than your madness, and it is a gold mine too. No, this is not Dr. Seuss talking... It's your future pointing you in the right business idea direction.
As I indulged book-reading for pleasure recently, it came across a phrase that I had to underline: “Nothing unearths what we really believe, faster than examining what pisses us off.”
That's right. One of the best ways to discover our life's purpose is to reflect on what makes us angry, what irritates us, and what annoys us. It gives us a chance to discover what problem, what injustice, or even just what inconvenience we are passionate about. And ultimately to think of a solution to it. And then bingo! Here is a glimmer of an entrepreneurial idea that can't wait to come to life. This quote got me to introspect too. What riles me up? What are my clues?
For example, here is one that you might appreciate: When people ask me what I do for a living, I usually reply: - "I help people gain the freedom they seek by showing them how to research and start the right business for them." And I ask: - "Have you ever dreamed of starting a business?" Most times they happily share a business idea they have or had... But if inquire what they are doing to bring it to life, 9 out of 10 times they do nothing except coming up with reasons they don’t or can't.
And that's my clue: It saddens me when I hear of ideas for new businesses that never see the light of day...
The underlining reason is always the risk of failure. Of course, this is a perfectly rational reason especially considering that the Small Business Administration (SBA) reports that: "42% of startup fail because they offer products and services the market doesn't need."
Leading to another clue: OK, that too agitates me, because there is a way to avoid failure and greatly minimize the risks of starting any new business.
Having an idea for a business is one thing. Making it happen is harder. Yet most people would be perfectly capable of successfully bringing a business idea to life (and finding ways around every obstacle) if they knew how to research and validate their idea well before they took great monetary risks.
So for fun, I decided to make this is our topic of the next Saturday Morn' Brew & Chat. During this bi-weekly chat over a favorite morning beverage, I'll help you to clarify the process of birthing any idea you might have for a business so that you can get a sense of its feasibility. I'll be sharing the steps. It is not complicated if you take it one step at a time, and in the right sequence. I'll explain the building blocks I use to help my coaching clients explore any business idea and so that we can validate if it might fly and not flop. Then we'll discuss your questions.
There is no risk in doing a bit of exploration, is there? Exploration can be fun too! Most people who have ideas love to brainstorm on them. After all, pioneering and pushing boundaries is intrinsically American. It’s in our DNA! As a naturalized American, I am keenly aware of the cultural uniqueness of my adoptive country and its love of challenging the status quo.
So, think of your idea, or think of something you'd like to fix and join me online next Saturday to discuss the steps to explore (and vet) any business idea, well before you risk significant sums.
