Oil, Gas and Energy Law Intelligence (OGEL, ISSN 1875-418X,?www.ogel.org) invites submissions for a Special issue exploring ‘The Impact of the War in Ukraine on the Energy Sector

Energy market participants face unprecedented uncertainty as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In the past few months, demands for rouble gas payments and supply disruptions have dominated the European energy landscape. In May 2022, the European Commission presented the REPowerEU Plan, highlighting that there is a ‘double urgency’ to transform Europe’s energy system: (1) ending the EU’s dependence on Russian energy imports and (2) tackling the climate crisis. Measures including energy savings, diversification of energy supplies, and accelerated roll-out of renewable energy, are at the heart of the EU’s response to recent events. While the spotlight has been primarily on European energy markets, the war in Ukraine has wider implications for the energy sector, increasingly putting pressure on global energy supply and demand fundamentals. The Asian and European energy markets have at times reversed in terms of their pricing trends. Amidst several uncertain factors, including price volatility, policy changes, sanctions, investment exits, and disputes, the war could have ripple effects on all energy sources (including oil, coal, gas/LNG, hydrogen, and renewables) and market segments (upstream to downstream). The effects of the war could also influence approaches to the energy transition.?

We encourage submission of relevant papers, studies, and comments on various legal aspects of this evolving landscape.

Topics of interest include:

  • REPowerEU: implementation and challenges
  • Energy policy changes and their long-term effects
  • The impact of the war on the energy transition
  • Contractual responses to market disruptions
  • The resurgence of long-term LNG contracts
  • Hydrogen: growth prospects and projects
  • The impact of sanctions on the energy industry
  • New trends in international commercial and investment disputes
