The Often Neglected Competence...
You might have superior strengths and abilities compared with other people in certain areas. But, if you can’t work cooperatively with others, your individual strengths and abilities won’t matter much; because your inability to cooperate well with others will negatively impact the work and outcomes of the whole group.
Some people believe that what matters most for their career is their individual ability to produce desired results, even if that means running over the good-will, ambitions, and dignity of other people. After forty-plus years of working in the business world, It's been my experience that there’s ultimately a huge cost to that kind of thinking and behavior. What goes around comes around. Businesses and individuals who attempt to accomplish great things by abusing the dignity and good-will of the people they are working with will eventually fall short or fail outright.
On the other hand, it’s fair to say that some people just make others around them better. They may not be the most individually knowledgeable, skilled, or experienced, but their knack for knowing how to support and help others perform optimally is highly impactful. This is the one area of competence that makes everything else more valuable.
If you can become someone who can effectively mobilize the intelligence, awareness, confidence, and competence of a group of people to accomplish great things, your value will escalate. This is why I always tell my clients to pay attention to developing their skills at working synergistically with others for the benefit of the whole; not just themselves or their part of the company. Not only is it a lot more beneficial to your career, it’s a whole lot more fun.
