Ofsted Chairman says Isle of Wight is inbred, poor white ghetto....Really!!!

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3725086/Ofsted-chairman-says-Isle-Wight-inbred-poor-white-ghetto-discusses-friends-dinner-parties.html

Our grandmother's family originate from the Isle of Wight and we can trace our families there back to 1490.

You would have thought that Ofsted boss David Hoare would have done his homework since the history of the Island is ancient; mentioned back as far as first century AD in Greek documents.. He apparently enjoys telling people including at his dinner parties, that the Isle of Wight is a 'ghetto' full of inbreeding.

Well since the Island was invaded numerous times  including by the Romans, Jutes, Normans, Saxons and there were repeated attempts by the French up to 1545; I doubt that the Islanders are as inbred as anyone else in the UK.

I lived there for a time in the 1970s and the people were terrific.. it was usually those who came over to the island that caused the problems.. Of course lack of employment, a fall in British tourism and a poorly administrated education system (from the top Ofsted) has taken its toll. However, it is a wonderful holiday destination.. great archaeology and history.. If it was good enough for Queen Victoria it is good enough for anyone.

As in any city in the UK there are areas that suffer from deprivation more than others and this will include the crime rate. However that too is a funding administration issue.

I suggest that David Hoare looks to his office to make changes to improve the education system and whilst there is no doubt that some of the billions we spend each year on foreign aid, is spent on good causes.. a great deal is not..

I think it would be better spent at home in places like the Isle of Wight who deserve funding far more.

"Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills. We inspect and regulate services that care for children and young people, and services providing education and skills for learners of all ages"

Ball in your court Mr. Hoare and I suggest an apology might be a good start.

As a "Caulkhead" (someone from the IoW) myself, I am slightly offended by Hoare's comments. Many of my family members still live there, so I return to visit at least once a year. People on the IoW are welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable, and pretty much as far from Hoare's description as you might get. However, there IS something in what he says. Years of mismanaged education, poor investment in industries, and a general lack of opportunity for young people has resulted in a brain drain from the?Island. For most ambitious people, there is little to keep them on the Island, and its geography obviously precludes the possibility of commuting to places where opportunities might be greater. The trend is alarming, as those who peform poorly at school are less likely to move away. This perhaps explains Hoare's comment of it being a ghetto for poor white inbreds. As Sally says, though, he is in a great position to actually do something about this, rather than just point and laugh about a situation which he does not seem to fully understand. The Isle of Wight is beautiful, and full of beautiful people. It is time they were given opportunities that exist elsewhere in the country.

That was a crass, pointless comment.
