OFP Insider #3: Beat the Heat with Earth's Air Conditioning
?? It's getting hot in here, so get out all your trees- literally and figuratively! Unprecedented heat waves are overtaking different areas of the planet as summer revs up, from Mexico to Portugal and Algeria, posing serious health concerns for both planet and people.
"In general, climate models indicate that heat waves all over the globe will grow more frequent and more intense as the world warms."- Scientific American
The impact of heat waves, and a warming planet, effects every system we rely on, from the energy grid to our economy to the daily ability to function. Especially in cities where urban heat islands occur due to the absorption and retention properties of pavement and buildings, temperatures are soaring.
What could naturally draw down heat levels on the short term and carbon in the long term, while providing a myriad of other health benefits? ?? (Yes, you guessed correctly) trees and forests! ??
On average, green areas cool European cities by 1.07 C! By utilizing our natural carbon sinks and air conditioners, we can streamline investment into greening city spaces, conserve energy and biodiversity, and increase health benefits for all.
Stay green and stay cool- onto the news!

?? Keeping the Lights On- Axios
The U.S. power grid is under increasing threat from extreme weather events fueled by climate change. Hotter temperatures, more frequent and intense heat waves, heavier rains, and stronger hurricanes are all straining the nation's aging electricity infrastructure.
Power outages from weather-related events have doubled over the past two decades, and costs from damage and lost revenue have totaled at least $25 billion since 2010, according to a new report. Mitigating climate change could help keep the lights on ??

?? Hats off to Switzerland for Paving the Way!- CNN
Switzerland passed a new climate law aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050! The law includes measures like increasing taxes on CO2 emissions and requiring Swiss companies to report their climate risks.
The move comes as Switzerland's glaciers are melting at an alarming rate due to rising global temperatures. The country has already lost more than half of its glacier volume since the early 1900s. The new climate law is an effort to curb emissions and slow the loss of Switzerland's iconic glaciers, as well as limit the impact of climate change on the economy and society.
