Offshore Winds

Offshore Winds

India’s energy demand has consistently increased over the years, leading to the exploration of various energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, and coal. However,? with numerous water bodies surrounding the nation, offshore wind power has emerged as a potential energy source capable of transforming energy generation capabilities and making power accessible to everyone.

In addition to its prosperous onshore wind energy sector, India is in relatively untested waters with offshore wind energy.?

With a coastline spanning approximately 7,600 km, the country is surrounded by water bodies on three sides.

However, several barriers, such as the development of port infrastructure, the rising costs of installing turbines in the sea, and numerous delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, have hindered the progress of the industry.

Given the constantly growing electricity demand in the country, it is imperative to ensure the supply of power to every corner of the nation through feasible and clean energy sources like wind energy. This necessity arises from the declining availability of fossil fuels due to their excessive consumption, highlighting the urgency to explore alternative energy sources.?

Given the diverse geographical settings, India is well positioned to fulfil its energy requirements through a range of alternative sources that not only reduce the dependence on non-renewable energy but also contribute to improved energy efficiency.

According to a draft plan released by the federal power ministry, it is projected that the country’s annual electricity demand will reach 1,874 billion units by the end of March 2027.?

Encouraging progress has been observed over the years in the development of offshore wind power. In 2013, a consortium led by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) initiated project FOWIND Project Management Unit (Facilitating Offshore Wind in India). The project aimed to identify potential zones for offshore wind power development in India and promote research and development activities.

We recognise the efforts taken towards planning for a fuel-efficient future and sincerely hope that people are able to realise the benefits out of this, and ultimately achieve economical energy generation!?
