Offload Your Worry

Offload Your Worry

My family calls me a ‘worrywart.’ I always worry about everything that could possibly go wrong!

Worry is a state of anxiety and uncertainty over actual or potential problems

I’ve learned to take charge of my worry and manage it not let it control me! Don’t let constant worry compromise your ability to live your life or respond to challenges.

Recognize your fears

Often, we try to ignore or suppress our worries, but this can actually make them stronger. Instead, take a moment to recognize your feelings of worry. What is it that you fear? Say it out loud or write it down.

Challenge your thoughts

Worry often comes from negative thought patterns. You might think, "What if something goes wrong?" or "I'm not good enough." These thoughts can spiral into bigger worries if left unchecked. Challenge these thoughts by asking yourself: Is this thought based on fact or assumption? Is there another way to look at this situation?

Use it to problem-solve

Instead of just worrying about potential problems, think about how you can prevent them. As a conference organizer, I used my worries to figure out what might go wrong and developed a set of guidelines for how to handle issues. Of course, I wasn’t able to predict all potential problems, but when I encountered something unexpected, I was able to work through a solution calmly. Over time, those problems became the basis of a set of FAQs and guidelines for my staff so they could troubleshoot and correct problems. Make your worries work for you!

Take action

Sometimes, the best way to offload worry is to take action. If there's something specific you're worried about, ask yourself what steps you can take to address it. This might mean making a plan, setting a goal, or seeking advice from others. Taking action can help you feel more in control and reduce feelings of worry.

Focus on mindfulness

Mindfulness can be a powerful tool for managing worry. Mindfulness helps you stay anchored in the present moment without judgment. It prevents you from worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. Start with a few minutes of mindfulness meditation each day, focusing on your breath or the sensations in your body.

Practice self-care

Don't forget to practice self-care. This not only includes taking care of your physical health – eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep – but also your emotional health. Take time to relax and participate in activities you enjoy.

Seek support

If worry and stress are leading to anxiety and affecting your physical or mental health, don't hesitate to seek help. You're not alone in this, and there are people who can help you manage it.

Remember, it's not about eliminating worry completely but learning to manage it effectively. Take one step at a time, and know that it's okay to take care of yourself. You've got this!

My mom often told me that the best way to alleviate those concerns is to engage in cleaning or organizing. By doing so, I divert my attention away from worries and create a mental space for the solutions to emerge naturally. Ties into your take action point. ??

Ann - Great tips for resilience! Understanding that "worry" is actually normal and "ok" as long as you also understand it is something you can actually manage with success. I like to suggest to folks to ask "HOW it can be done" instead of "CAN it be done" when faced with a problem.
