As layoffs continue, RTO mandates continue, and full-time in the office can be interpreted as 3, 4, or 5 days a week, let's highlight a company that's getting great performance from their offices and quote their workplace leader 'Offices are working for us.' And that company is Atlassian.
That's right,. Atlassian, an Australian firm that's been doing things their own way since the beginning, distributed between Sydney and San Francisco early on, with many more locations added since. And their people are NOT required to EVER come in, except as orchestrated at the team level. They checked the data, listened to the people, and adjusted each location to fit the needs of the local Atlassian. And it's working well without mandates.
It was also the week of Vision Pro reviews, we I called a friend who's been hosting a speaker series in the metaverse for over 20 episodes, to get his take and compare and contrast connections in the virtual world.
That and more in this week's Friday Five, five posts that touched a nerve with the community
The Friday Five
Offices are working for us
Our executive team has always been very committed to the idea that offices are this unique cultural temple and a great experience - Annie Dean
If you didn't know Annie Dean, based on these quotes, you might think she works for a certain financial services firm based in NYC, and while justified, you'd be mistaken.
In fact, she works for one of the more progressive, globally distributed, Syndey-born, flexibility-first firms out there, Atlassian, a leader in high-functioning distributed organizations. Document-led, open source. One size does not fit all, deliver to local demand.

Virtual Worlds, Digital Interpretation, Avatars and Connection
What has been really cool is this feeling of being together, being around a table, breaking bread, those kinds of feelings get triggered within me, and within others that show up as well - Dave Cairns
One interview, three modes: face-to-face, Zoom Avatar to Avatar, and inside the world of Virbela.
Dave has hosted 20 virtual events, covering intense and personal topics, so he knows a little about doing things in the virtual world. As our feeds fill with Vision Pro reviews, and Apple moves the AR/IR/MR/VR reality a little closer, I figured we should check in with someone who's spent some time in virtual worlds doing more than playing games or HR training.

Coordinate connection with intention and automation
The recurring theme we heard most often when people go into the office, that experience left a lot to be desired ... People wanted to go into the office based on who else was going to be in the office - Rob Sadow
领英推荐
Covid forced Rob and team Scoop to pivot from commuting to coordinating. The core remains, removing friction, making it easier for people to coordinate schedules to be at the same place, at the same time. There's nothing worse than a dark, empty space, when I took the time, and effort, and was excited to come in and see colleagues.Less effort intentionality.
That's something we can all get behind in 2024.

Really enjoyed being on Transforming Work with Sophie Wade. Episode 101, like the highway that's mapped much of my 35+ years in the Bay. Interviewing smart people is a cheat. Sharing is a force multiplier. Here are few favorites, there are dozens more, and I can go on for days.?Thanks again Sophie.

Bonus - Casey does Apple Vision Pro
In that moment, I was like 'Holly S#it, this is it!' This is the future of computing that everyone's been promising for like the last 15 years. This is something that let me truly peek into where all of this is going. This is the future of computing - Casey Neistat
Lots of Apple Vision Pro videos hit YouTube this week. And if you want a fantastic breakdown of the device, follow Casey's advice and watch the three-part series from Marques Brownlee (aka MKBHD). Of course, Casey takes it in a direction I hadn't expected.
Again, this highlights how even the biggest brands in the world, with the best, and most financed creative, ad agencies, and designers, STILL go out to the community, to elicit N more interpretations, voices, and stories about the most important product launch at Apple since the iPhone?
