They say you shouldn't mix business with pleasure, but let’s be real—when you spend eight hours a day (or more!) with the same people, sparks are bound to fly. Office romances can be thrilling, complicated, and sometimes downright scandalous. We’ve got a couple who took the plunge, and they’re ready to spill all the juicy details.
Meet Sardani?and Annai—not their real names, of course.?These two took a chance to fall in love in the workplace, and now they’re here to spill all the juicy details. From stolen glances by the coffee machine to navigating office gossip, their story has it all—romance, risk, and a dash of drama.
1) How did your office romance begin?
We first met at the Company Dinner in 2015 and had a brief chat until someone got jealous and interrupted our conversation. We then reconnected at a colleague’s farewell party, where he kindly offered to guide me home since we lived nearby.
One weekend, he asked me out for lunch, but I politely declined as I had plans to visit the salon, suggesting we could go another time. Two weeks later, we had lunch together at an Indian restaurant in Bangsar, then spent the rest of the day visiting Mid Valley and Bangsar, ending the night at 1am!
From that point, we began meeting regularly for dinner after work, attending training together, and eventually, he asked me to be his girlfriend. I explained that I needed to speak with my parents first, as he was Ceylonese and I am Punjabi, and being the only girl in my family, I was unsure of their approval. I shared the news with my parents, and they agreed to meet him. When the day came for them to meet, they gave their blessings.
2) Did you have any concerns about dating a colleague? Why or why not?
I did have concerns about needing to leave my job since I work in the HR department. However, my manager, being very understanding, spoke to the CEO on my behalf. We received the CEO’s blessing without any issues, though there were some limitations, which I’ve been fine with up until today.
3) Did you and your partner set any boundaries to separate work and personal life?
Yes, we do. Work is work, and we keep any office drama at the office. We don’t discuss work-related matters at home, especially those that are private and confidential. We mostly talk about the people at the office and their dramas.
4) How did your colleagues react when they found out about your relationship?
They were shocked to learn about it during our ROM wedding when a relative posted the pictures on Facebook. Our colleagues at the office started messaging us, surprised by our relationship, as we had kept it private.
5) Were there any instances where your relationship created tension or conflict at work?
So far, no, as we don’t work in the same department and don’t report to each other.
?6) Would you advise others to engage in office romance? Why or why not?
Yes, I would encourage office romance. We’ve inspired two other couples in our office who recently got married.
?Sardani?and Annai are now happily married with two lovely children, and we wish them both a long lasting marriage and relationship together.
