As we close out the first month of 2025, here are my latest observations on strategy hiring and job hunting.
The State of the Market: What Does February Look Like for Strategy Recruitment?
There’s been an uplift in strategy opportunities, though these are concentrated at the Strategy Director level, leaving a noticeable gap in mid-level roles.
The market continues to be shaped by economic uncertainties, technological innovation, and shifting talent demands.
I anticipate further movement influenced by WPP’s office mandate once it’s fully implemented, with many strategists—especially those based outside London—starting their job search sooner rather than later.
The Demand for Problem Solvers: A Luxury or Necessity?
Strategic planners remain in high demand as businesses navigate complexity, but there’s a shift in perception. Strategy is no longer seen as a “nice-to-have” but a necessity, particularly for small to medium-sized businesses grappling with tighter budgets amidst economic uncertainty.
This shift has driven a rise in demand for freelance or fractional strategists—call it what you will. These roles provide businesses with the flexibility to access top-tier thinking without committing to full-time hires.
Are your retaining your employees & attracting new ones?
Some businesses may think they’re retaining talent, but strategists are clear about their priorities: roles that align with personal values and offer true flexibility, and for many, hybrid working remains non-negotiable.
Whatever the agenda for WPP's mandatis productivity, property costs, 3rd party pressures, or pure presenteeism, businesses must align their in-office policies with their culture if they want to keep top talent engaged.
For those looking to attract new talent, competing on in-office requirements means considering additional benefits to sweeten the deal. Travel subsidies, enhanced wellness programmes, or creative perks tied to on-site work could help make the prospect more appealing. The question is: are you making your offer worth the commute?
Strategists: Are You Demonstrating Your Value?
AI continues to reshape the marketing landscape, and strategists must adapt. While it’s easy to focus on generative AI tools, many strategists are already AI-literate, leveraging predictive analytics, campaign automation, and data insights in their work.
The real edge will come from pairing AI proficiency with core category and channel specialisms, ie sustainability, healthcare, and social and content strategy, it's these combined capabilities that will set candidates apart in an increasingly competitive space.
