According to the National Cancer Institute, about 89,000 young people (ages 15 to 39) are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States—accounting for about five percent of cancer diagnoses in the United States.
Certain cancers, such as primary bone cancer, Hodgkin lymphoma and testicular cancer, are most frequently diagnosed among adolescents and young adults. However, the incidence of specific cancer types varies according to age. Lymphomas and thyroid cancer are the most common cancers among 15- to 24-year-olds. Among 25- to 39-year-olds, breast cancer and thyroid cancer are the most common, based on NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Cancer Stat Facts.
During National Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) highlights the unique challenges young adult blood cancer patients and survivors face beyond treatment—including social, emotional, and other concerns.
To help young patients and survivors, the LLS offers a sense of community and free, comprehensive resources for every step of the journey, including support from:
LLS’s goal is to help young blood cancer patients not only survive but also go on to live their best lives. With your compassionate gift, we’ll be there for them until we find cures.
