Odense University Hospital gives a ?voice? to artificially dumb patients

The biggest intensive care Unit in Denmark is known for its innovative thinking and visionary employees. They have developed an app that enables patients in mechanical ventilation to communicate with staff and relatives; something otherwise impossible while having a tube down their throat.

OUH is also a pioneer for not putting patients in artificial coma with the use of sedatives (thereby avoiding many side effects) while in mechanical ventilation. This is why such an app has an important role to play.

"Some of the worst patient’s experience is actually being unable to say something while critically ill," says Eva Laerkner, the nurse behind this initiative. She also mentioned that ?staff and the patients have given really good feedback on the solution?. This is hardly surprising since better communication in general across wards is also often at the root of better patient care and wellbeing.

The solution is called Talk2Care and is developed in conjunction with OUH and Bluefragments.
