Ode to My Crush and the Center of My Vision

This week I was asked by a friend who I would name as my celebrity crush if I were asked to name one.

Without pause, and in all sincerity, I responded with a one-word answer:

“Spartanburg.”

Not two days later, a colleague asked me which image would be at the center of my vision board should I choose to make one.

Without pause, and in all sincerity, I responded with a one-word answer:

“Spartanburg.”

“Why?” you may ask.

I must admit, I surprised even myself with the swiftness of my responses.

But upon further reflection, I am even more convicted that my gut reaction was, in fact, an answer I would defend.

Why?

Because, Spartanburg, you are a beautiful place-in-the-making, an imperfect being, bursting with history, soul, and the desire to become the best version of yourself.

Spartanburg, you are the mosaic of the faces and the hands and the hearts of all who make you—all who HAVE made you—all who WILL make you—for better and for worse—who you are.

Spartanburg, you hold in tandem the grit of those who have worked to build your foundation and the bright optimism of those who see the boundless potential of your future.

Spartanburg, you are my vision because you are my home. And on a day like this one, I know that we will each—we will both—we will ALL be stronger—together.
