An Ode to learners

An Ode to learners

Disclaimer: While the article is largely intended to benefit the latest batch of learners from the emerging leaders program 2.0, I have attempted to use generic references to suit audience unrelated to this specific program, however, are interested in purposeful learning.

Often we find ourselves in situations where we undergo training programs, enjoy the experience however find it difficult to either apply those learnings and/ or absorb and cement learnings. Following techniques would help you sustain and apply learnings in your workplace:

Vision: When I was in class 10, my sole ambition was to secure 85% marks in the board exams. I wanted to pursue science subjects for my higher studies, securing 85% would comfortably get me to the 1st cut-off list for science class admissions. They say you can only run as far as your vision goes. Unless we have a definitive vision set out for a learning journey, we somehow will fall short of our aspirations. Hence it’s important to set a goal, a vision for this journey. It may sound impractical to think of a vision for learning but if you just spend a minute thinking about your immediate professional goals and ask – How will this learning journey help me achieve this goal? it’s not that difficult.

It’s race against time: Since you may not be the only one undergoing this journey, it’s better to be ahead of competition than undermining their progress. Two things that can help you stay on track:

  1. Keeping a visual reminder of the vision (in the form of a post-it note on the mirror/desk where it constantly reminds you of the journey you had embarked on)
  2. Break this journey into small milestones and celebrate reaching the milestones.

Discipline: Ok let’s admit it – It’s difficult to follow a regime. Let’s also admit that windfalls don’t last. We have little choice but to walk this difficult path. We can’t evade exceptions, there will always be family commitments, professional pressures but a disciplined lifestyle will ensure you still accomplish what you had planned for. At the end of each day evaluate your action items with respect to your journey and ensure you action it before going to bed. Make it a habit.

Collaboration: This is actually a hack, it acts as an accelerator when you are in the company of colleagues or peers who also have similar agendas. Have regular planned discussions on progress, best practices, highs & lows. This helps you keep up your motivation. Discuss details with your supervisor/coach. He/she will appreciate the efforts you are making and will be forced to observe and share feedback when you regularly approach them.

Passion & drive: This is what will set you apart from the rest. There will be people who would succumb to an ordinary life. If you have set out high benchmarks, don’t let the drive go down in you. To ensure you have the same levels maintained, check for the progress you make at regular intervals. See how far you have come and how much more you need to achieve. Your accomplishments always give you the fuel to move ahead with gusto.

Outcome: Have tangible outcomes you are working towards. Ensure your goals (personal or professional) are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound)

PS: Don’t forget to celebrate at the end of this journey. I am already looking forward to the invites. All the best!!
