Ode to Carnival Past and Future, Sadly Not Present.

Are you mourning this year’s lack of Carnival’s spiritual cleanse, its satirical sorting of society’s woes to give us perspective? I am.

Here are two essays in tandem. The first a quick thought on the hail of satirical Carnival bullets from around the world that America dodged this year. We're on borrowed time, with luck they'll find us next year. The second gives some insight into the roots and meaning of Carnival. It reprises a 2013 imagining of Washington, DC as a target-rich Carnival City, which I include because so much of it became bedrock for the very strange time to come.
