The Addiction Worker

The Addiction Worker

I worry each time I meet a new patient.

I worry how they will react to me.

I worry if I will connect with them in a way that will help them grow.

I worry that I may be too sensitive and lose objectivity.

I worry that I may have to be tough on them, even though I know at some point I will probably have to be tough on them.

I worry if I will be able to be tough enough when that time comes.

I worry that I am missing something important.

I worry that I will be confident enough.

I worry that my insecurity will show through.

I worry that, even though they are doing better, they may relapse.

In spite of my worries...

I do this work because my patients are human and desperately need help.

I do this work because my patients need to know someone cares.

I do this work because my patients need to know they are not alone.

I do this work because it lets my patients know their life matters.

I do this work because it helps me learn and grow as a person.

I do this work because it helps me learn and grow as a professional.

I do this work because I get to see patients change their lives for the better in amazing ways and that I had some small part in making it happen.

I hope I never stop worrying.
