The odds are against you...
Let me put this in perspective. The odds are definitely against you in this industry, especially as an actor. I’m not trying to be mean. On the contrary, I genuinely want you to succeed. But to do that, you need to know that this is a business, and you need to approach it as you would any other type of business. If you can’t do that, then you will get lost in the shuffle.
Why do you pick the doctor you use? Why do you buy food from the cafe you like? Why do you shop at the stores you shop at? How do you know that these are the best choices you could make? Have you taken the time to really do the research? In many instances, I suspect that you’ve made these choices because it’s “What you know”, and “what you are familiar with” and “what stands out in your mind”.
This, my friend, is marketing.
So, market yourself, and learn how to do it.
A short film that I just completed, had 7 roles in it. Because I found some great talent, and was able to get the director to consider going in a slightly different direction than what she originally planned, one of the roles was split into 2. So we ended up with 8 roles.
There were over 5200 submissions for this project. And we ultimately cast only 8 people. Look at this graph, showing where the submissions came from.
Now, you tell me…
What are the odds?
Sincerely,
Leslie

3 年Wow. I found that really interesting. Thanks.

3 年This is great. Thank you for sharing! It's very eye-opening and freeing. It's also interesting to see that statically speaking, 100% of the director's referral was cast. Would you say that every project has a director's referral that gets to audition?

3 年1% chance is actually very high... I strive most around .03% chance.

3 年Wow that really puts auditioning into perspective! But even though so many people might apply, it is always still worth it to put your best in every time.
