Oculus Quest Impression
After finding an Oculus Quest for the kids for Christmas which was not easy, I’ve been able to spend a lot more time with the headset here lately. It removes the setup barriers by removing wires and externally tracking cameras. This new inside/outside tracking works very well. It also significantly lowers the cost barrier by not requiring a powerful PC since it is stand alone. While the graphics aren’t as powerful as a headset wired to a powerful PC, they were better than what I would expect from a mobile powered experience. It is apparent they have optimized everything to work as well as possible. The lowering of barriers has put this VR headset more in the grasp of mainstream consumers and not just the enthusiast. Being able to jump into and our of VR so easily is a game changer. For our experiences at work, I see this headset working best for stand up experiences where freedom of motion is important and the highest quality of graphics is not necessary. I believe the future of VR headsets is definitely staying wireless with built in tracking. The graphics will continue to improve with powerful mobile power and/or wirelessly streaming content from a more powerful device. Now we just need to carve out some time to try bringing some of the experiences we have built for PC based VR over to the Quest.
