On most social media I like to share new things that amaze, delight, or educate on a topic. I don't often do that here but this week I wanted to share an article related to my charity of choice--the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The community service hours I donate help me keep two of my certifications (California Naturalist, NAI Interpretive Guide) but I like the aquarium it is a happy place where people learn and get to experience and look into windows of ecosystems.
They discover the plants and animals that work together in wonderous ways, how the ocean impacts us all, and just how important it is. The aquarium reflects the animals and habitats living and visiting just outside the building--it is like looking through a microscope.
This makes the ocean accessible to anyone without getting wet, regardless of age, physical ability, or other hurdles.
In my lifetime, attributing human emotions to them was discouraged and professionals forming deep connections with animals was frowned upon my colleague in the zoological and early oceanariums while we were working to create deep connections in the public we served.
Today, that has changed for when you interpret (translate what people are seeing) so others can understand, connect, and care it motivates change through awareness.
