Meet the new EAU Section Office chair: Prof. Thomas Knoll

Prof. Thomas Knoll (DE) has recently taken over as chair of the EAU Section Office , succeeding Prof. Rassweiler (AT). In this interview, he shares his vision and priorities for the future: "I’m convinced the Sections are the heart of the EAU! They contain the expertise, leadership and innovation, it’s clear that the Sections have a major role to play in many EAU initiatives including scholarships, the ESU, the Policy Office, the Young Urologists Office, mentoring programmes and so on.” Read his full interview here .


International exchange tours - application deadline is 1 November!

Do you have ambitions of gaining international urological experience in 2025? Applications are now open to EAU members for two upcoming EAU International Academic Exchange Programmes.

  • The JUA Japanese Exchange Tour will run from 6-19 April 2025, featuring clinical visits to top Japanese medical centres and participation at the Annual JUA Meeting in Fukuoka, Japan from 17-20 April 2025.
  • The AUA American Exchange Tour will take place from 25 April - 11 May 2025, beginning with the Annual AUA Meeting in Las Vegas, USA from 26-29 April 2025, followed by clinical visits to leading urological centres in USA.

Taking vital reconstructive skills back to Ukraine

In this report, Assoc. Prof. Liliya Tryfonyukl (UA) shares key learnings and hands-on experience she gained from her recent 1-year reconstructive urology scholarship in Lisbon, Portugal. She discusses the vital skills and knowledge she can now make use of in the Ukraine.

Assoc. Prof. Tryfonyukl: "Over the past year, we have set up a laboratory where we can perform urodynamic studies, which are extremely important for diagnosing urinary tract conditions and selecting treatment. Although such an examination is routine in modern clinics around the world, for our western region with a population of several million and several thousand wounded, it was an almost heroic act." Treatment for lower urinary tract dysfunctions: future advancements in neuromodulation

Neuromodulation techniques are advised as a third-line therapy for overactive bladder syndrome (OAB), following the failure of behavioural and pharmacological therapies. In this article, Prof. Marcio Averbeck (BR) reviews some of the innovative and promising technologies are currently being developed specifically for patients with refractory LUTD . "Fundamental technological advances in sacral neuromodulation (SNM) have been implemented over the past few years, including implantable pulse generators with longer half-lives, rechargeable and MRI-compatible devices. The October UROONCO BCa Educational Platform Article of the Month features the NIAGARA trial results suggesting that gemcitabine-cisplatin + perioperative durvalumab could improve event-free & overall survival in muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) patients.
