October Steel Industry Update

October Steel Industry Update

Industry focus on embodied carbon in construction and construction materials has ramped up, with new government initiatives focused on capturing and reducing emissions, and increased industry demand for EPDs. Read on below for more on these topics.

ACRS will hold a dedicated event to help our partners better understand embodied carbon in steel – if you would like more information on this, please?get in touch.

Supply chain traceability – and its enablement via digital advancements – also continues to be a key focus. ACRS presented on this topic at the?Building Product Leaders Forum?and continues to progress capabilities around product traceability.

NSW & Fed Gov initiatives to decarbonise infra

NSW Government Infrastructure NSW launched its Decarbonising Infrastructure Delivery Policy and Measurement Guidance in April this year. The policy will apply to relevant projects from April 2025. The Measurement Guidance has also been?adopted nationally.

The Measurement details requirements to measure embodied carbon across Gov infrastructure projects, while the Policy aims to make carbon emissions a key consideration through all stages of infra projects.

Our latest article covers everything you need to know about the initiatives, including

  • What will change
  • How measurement applies to steel products
  • How the initiatives will impact procurement
  • How ACRS can help
  • Key takeaways for both the construction industry, and steel suppliers

How to pick an EPD

Increasingly, the construction industry expects?Environmental Product Declarations for the materials it purchases, especially steel. As the focus on green ratings and projects’ environmental impact and performance continues to grow, EPDs are a primary, internationally accepted tool for comparing materials and calculating a building’s impact.

Get the rundown on EPDs in our latest article, including:

  • What is an EPD?
  • What do EPDs cover?
  • What do people use them for?
  • How should you compare EPDs?

ACRS gives particular thanks to Jonas Bengtsson , Vice Chair EPD Australasia and Founder Director of Edge Impact , for his presentation at the?Building Product Leaders Forum?on Australian EPDs for Building Products, September 2025. You can see his full presentation?here.

The ‘Golden Thread’ of traceability

There was great interest in Dr Andrew Wheeler , Executive Director ACRS, presentation at Building Products Industry Council (BPIC) ’s?Building Product Leaders Forum 2024, on ACRS advancements in digital verification and traceability. You can see the full presentation?here.

Traceability is a key part of conformity assessment, and with increasing demand for “The Golden Thread” of traceability in building products, a system-agnostic approach for product traceability is needed. ACRS has been progressing this technology, and the next step will be the introduction of system-agnostic digital credentials on product labels, enabling the validation of claims in conjunction with opensource protocols.

About ACRS

ACRS was created in 2000 by consumer associations and peak technical bodies, that remain members to this day, including Engineers Australia, the Australian Institute of Building, and Austroads.

ACRS annually certifies over 100 steel producers and processors, issuing over 200 certificates that cover close to 300 production sites, spanning 24 countries. The ACRS audits and review process is carried out by its own qualified and experienced metallurgists and engineers. Certified firms include the leading Australian suppliers InfraBuild and BlueScope; members of the Steel Reinforcement Institute of Australia; and large international suppliers like Nippon Steel Corporation, POSCO, and Hyundai Steel.
