1/ SLB launches carbon storage screening, ranking solution for optimal CCUS site selection at ADIPEC 2023
Schlumberger (SLB) has introduced a carbon storage screening and ranking solution, enhancing confidence in choosing suitable sites for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects. This solution minimizes the risk of selecting suboptimal storage sites, which can waste resources and hinder CCUS project progress, ultimately impeding global net-zero goals. Frederik Majkut, SVP of Carbon Solutions for SLB's New Energy business, emphasized the importance of safe and cost-effective storage sites for CCUS scalability.
SLB's solution evaluates storage site capacity, economic viability, and potential risks using a blend of technical and nontechnical data, drawing insights from successful global storage projects. Proprietary tools, along with advanced digital workflows, ensure a rapid, traceable, and consistent validation process, with a strong focus on risk identification through sensitivity and uncertainty analysis.
In a collaboration with a customer in Trinidad and Tobago, SLB employed its screening and ranking solution to assess potential storage sites, aiding in offshore exploration and carbon storage licensing decisions. The methodology considered 67 key criteria, followed by sensitivity analysis to understand attribute influences and benchmarking against US and European storage basins. Using Monte Carlo simulations, SLB ranked sites for the customer, enabling them to prioritize prime subsurface and surface areas for further evaluation and investment.
This announcement was made during ADIPEC, an international event in Abu Dhabi, promoting collective efforts to accelerate decarbonization and ensure a sustainable energy future.
2/ ADIPEC 2023: Oil industry is “central” to global energy transition, executives say
Ministers and oil industry leaders are convening at ADIPEC, the Middle East's largest energy conference, as crude oil approaches $100 per barrel. Discussions at the event will focus on whether these price levels are sustainable and the outlook for OPEC+ supply reductions. Notably, this year's conference has a strong emphasis on climate issues, aligning with the growing importance of the energy transition.
Executives from major oil companies, including Halliburton, ExxonMobil, and bp, are stressing the need for the oil industry's involvement in COP28, highlighting the sector's role in transitioning to cleaner energy. They advocate for emissions reduction in both downstream and upstream operations, emphasizing electrification, carbon capture, and emissions detection as essential tools for #decarbonization.
Shell's CEO, Wael Sawan, asserts that shareholders will determine the viability of low-carbon energy options pursued by the company, highlighting the importance of balancing sustainability with financial returns.
Sultan Al Jaber, the president of the COP28 climate summit, reveals that numerous global oil industry players are committing to eliminate methane emissions and gas flaring by the end of the decade, alongside net-zero goals by 2050.
UAE's Energy Minister, Suhail al Mazrouei, addresses concerns about oil prices, emphasizing the need for higher prices to justify new investments and announcing capacity expansion in the UAE. He notes that OPEC+ production quotas will soon be based on up-to-date capacity figures.
