Achieving an Ambitious Net Zero Emission Target Through Distributed Solar Assets: Newcastle City Council (NCC) case study
City of Newcastle, Australia looked to SwitchDin to provide an integrated, real-time solution that would provide them with data and visibility for its entire portfolio of DER to support the NCC operations team.
Using SwitchDin’s Droplet controllers as communications gateways and smart energy managers, NCC is able to manage its behind-the-meter solar, batteries and key loads across 11 sites. Data from the Droplets is uploaded automatically through Wi-Fi or mobile internet to Stormcloud, SwitchDin’s smart, digital platform that securely connects DER from anywhere on the grid and makes them more secure and efficient. Through Stormcloud, NCC is able to connect, control and communicate with all of its DER regardless of the brands of devices.

Thanks to everyone who came out to EECON
Our team learned a lot at EECON 2022 in Brisbane, and our System Design Manager Dr Ian Griffiths came back to Newcastle and wowed the team with a slideshow showcase of the presentations from thinkers and doers across the industry who spoke at the event.
On day 2 of the event itself, our Data Science Team Lead Dr Alan Gore gave a presentation on the challenges facing the grid as network operators move to operationalise DER, as well as some examples of how we're rolling solutions out to solve the challenges. We're looking forward to making an even bigger splash at Electric Energy Society of Australia (EESA) 's EECON 2023!
...and Hunter Innovation Festival
Hunter Innovation Festival Fest was an opportunity for us to connect with and talk to the businesses and people that make our region great. SwitchDin was a Silver Sponsor for the event, where our CEO Dr Andrew M. joined a panel discussion on the opportunities that the recently-declared Hunter and Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone represent innovation in the region.
SwitchDin also had a showcase booth where we discussed our general value proposition with visitors, as well as the specific work we've done with Newcastle City Council (NCC), who was our first client. Check out the NCC case study below, which includes a link to a Stormcloud IQ dashboard showing the impact that rooftop solar has had towards the council's sustainability and clean energy goals.
