Are You Prepared For GA4?

If you haven't heard yet, Google Analytics is making big changes! Google will be transitioning from Google Analytics Universal (commonly known as Universal Analytics) to GA4 on July 1, 2023. This means that Google will be dropping support and tracking for Universal Analytics starting July 1st. While the change to GA4 seems like a while away, we recommend beginning the transition process as soon as possible to avoid any hiccups.

The switch to GA4 will be much bigger than any Google Analytics changes in the past. Expect changes to systems/processes, tools, skills/training, and potentially your annual budget, to ensure a smooth transition. Overall, GA4 is going to give you more flexibility and control over your analytics, but that comes with requiring more setup and forethought into your analytics. This is why we recommend beginning to think through your plan now.?

In short, you have four options to pick between when planning out your tracking past July 1st.?

  • Adopt GA4-Put in the time/training to be prepared for the new platform.
  • Move to a different hosted analytics platform such as Mixpanel, Matomo, Adobe Analytics, etc.
  • Implement an on-premise/first-party data tracking solution (requires fairly complex developer/engineering collaboration)
  • Deploy a combination of choosing a different hosted analytics platform and on-premise/first-party data tracking.

Once you have decided on a measurement solution for the future it is time to start preserving historic data. This will be detrimental if you want to continue your year-over-year reporting. While there are different paid solutions to aid in this process, exporting within Google Analytics to spreadsheets such as Google Sheet or Excel appear to be the most reliable method.?

While all this seems daunting, the more prepared you are the less stressful this change will be. We recommend doing further research into what works best for your company and getting the start on your plan before the end of 2022.
