White House Issues AI Executive Order

President Biden signed a long-awaited executive order yesterday “to ensure that America leads the way in seizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence.”?

Among other actions, it requires AI developers to share the results of safety tests with the government, the National Institute of Standards and Technology to set “rigorous standards” for red-team testing, and the Department of Commerce to develop “guidance for content authentication and watermarking to clearly label AI-generated content.”

The breadth of AI continues to widen, and the executive order seems aimed at balancing reasonable safeguards with allowing AI companies the room to keep advancing their technology. Last week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said at a Washington Post event, “There’s probably a limit to what you can do by executive order.” In other words, this is just the first step of government action when it comes to AI.

ChatGPT Adds New Tweaks to Beta Version

OpenAI is rolling out changes for Plus members, including an easier way to upload documents and analyze them. You could already upload documents via Advanced Data Analysis (formerly Code Interpreter), but this tweak makes it easier to search documents and ask questions about their contents.?

Another change coming to ChatGPT is that users will no longer have to create a new chat to switch tools. Under the default GPT-4 mode, the chatbot will automatically select the appropriate feature — like Browse With Bing, DALL·E 3, or Advanced Data Analysis — with each prompt.?

The updates may be in response to Anthropic’s Claude 2, which is heralded for its ability to easily read uploaded documents and digest three times more information than ChatGPT.

?? Template Your Award Nominations

What’s happening: We’re now in the fourth quarter, a time to both look ahead to 2024 and in the rear-view mirror at all that transpired this year. Part of that review process is taking inventory for year-end awards, with many nominations due in the coming weeks.

Why it matters: Writing award nominations can be time-consuming, and with a little bit of structure, AI can easily weed through case studies, projects, or initiatives and draft them into a nomination.

Try it out: Create a template for you, a client, or a colleague to fill out with relevant details about the project you want to nominate. Then plug the completed template into an AI tool like ChatGPT or Claude to flesh out the nomination. You can even upload full case studies or press releases to add more context. Some key questions to include in the template:?

  • What project are we nominating??
  • Describe the project in detail.?
  • What makes this project significant??
  • What results did this project achieve??
  • Who was involved in this project???

The key is to gather as much detail as you can to give the AI tools plenty of language to work with. Once AI has analyzed the template, ask it to answer the questions on the award nomination form — and be sure to check and edit the answers.?

Quote of the Week

AI “is the biggest transformational tech trend, which is why I believe we’re in the early stages of the next tech bull market. That’s going to send the bears back into their caves in hibernation mode.”

— Dan Ives, Managing Director at Wedbush Securities to Bloomberg
