- Planning – planning a project effectively is key to the successful delivery. Outlining project aims & objectives, cost, resource requirements, risk management and quality expectations are a few things that should be considered initially and developed through the design stage! Putting this plan together is essential but so too is sticking to it throughout the course of the project and adapting it as change is required. There is no set rule for the amount of time and resource you should allow for during the planning stage, particularly as projects vary considerably in terms of cost and complexity, however you can check out the APM Body of Knowledge 7th Edition for guidance on how to plan your project.
- Communication – this is perhaps one of the most important parts of a delivering a successful project, particularly in construction projects where there can be multiple contractors, consultants and/or client/stakeholders involved. All parties have a responsibility to communicate with each other which helps to ensure all tasks are being delivered well by the correct individual/group and to mitigate any duplication. That’s where us Project Managers come in! We are that central point of contact who keep everyone working together and making sure the right information is passed on to the right people at the right time.
- Collaboration – similar to ‘communication’ however this is specifically about being open and honest and sharing relevant information in good time to help other project members deliver their tasks. Collaborating well helps to avoid delays and mitigates bigger issues later down the project lifecycle where you may have less time/money and are less flexible therefore have fewer options.
