Oceans matter

Today is World Oceans Day. Everybody should know why Oceans matter.

Oceans is where life starts. 50% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by the sea. The balance of our ecosystem depends on it.

Oceans occupy 71% of the planet surface, however, the space world is better known than the undersea world. We estimate that 90% of it remains to be discovered, representing more than 50 millions species.

Oceans offer incredible technologies leading to 13 Nobel Prizes. 50% of cancer treatments are inspired by marine organisms. More than 80% of marine organisms produce biological light.

Seafood products are the first animal proteins source for more than 1 billion people on the planet.

64% of Oceans' surface does not belong to any specific country, it is our common duty to take care of it.

Just like renewable marine energies, bioluminescence is one of the amazing opportunity offered by the oceans. Using bioluminescence does not only raise awareness about the super-powers oceans have, but is also a concrete solution to act on protecting our oceans from the way we produce and consume. Why? Because light, as it is conceived today, is threatening our planet:

• today, light bulbs are produced with rare metals, extracted in mines, and not only consuming limited natural resources, but also polluting soil and water, affecting oceans' balance. As rare metals are already missing form the land, the next step would be to find it under the sea, which would be a total disaster for biodiversity.
• at the end of their lives, light bulbs are collected, but nobody knows how to recycle rare metals efficiently. It produces land-fill occupation, leading to soil and water pollution again.

As a biosourced and biodegredable solution, bioluminescence is definitely part of the answer and it has been our obsession building Glowee.

There is no Planet B and the planet we have is Blue. So let's just respect it, take care of it and get inspired from it to build a better world for tomorrow.
