OCEANR supports World Wildlife Day!

March 3 is World Wildlife Day. It is a United Nations International day to celebrate all the world's beautiful wild animals and plants and the contribution that they make to our lives and the health of the planet.

This year's theme is ‘Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation’. Thus, we would like to celebrate our partnership with Tengah Island Conservation (TIC), a non-profit biodiversity management initiative located on Pulau Tengah, an island within the Johor Marine Park, Malaysia. We are committed to the wellbeing of the coastal communities we encounter, play, swim and find solace within.

TIC was formed initially in collaboration with Batu Batu, an eco resort located within the park. At the time, Batu Batu didn’t have a conservation team but noticed that sea turtles were being poached of their eggs. In order to protect the population of turtles, some of which are critically endangered, TIC was born.

Their conservation efforts include;

  • The TIC scientists collect data on endangered green and critically endangered hawksbill turtles.
  • They do this to protect the populations of?the turtles, and to increase turtle hatchlings survival rates through best-practices in effective hatchery management and awareness.
  • The programme includes morning boat patrols of the neighbouring islands in order to try and encounter nests before they are either poached or predated.
  • Regular nightly patrols of the island are also scheduled to try and encounter and tag nesting females.
  • They are working towards a programme to sample the DNA of the hatchlings in order to study the population dynamics, as well as deploy satellite tags on nesting females in order to track their migratory routes and better advocate for their protection in the future.

"We need to place the voices of local communities, our world’s most effective guardians of biodiversity – front and centre." António Guterres, United Nations Secretary General.

Today and every day, let us all do our part to preserve natural habitats and build a thriving future for all living beings.?Partnerships for Conservation are vital, as no organisation, can tackle the biodiversity crisis on their own. We have a million species that are threatened with extinction, and it will need all our combined efforts to reverse this.

If you're a non profit organisation committed to ocean conservation, we would absolutely love to hear from you, apply to be one of our non-profit partners or find out a little more, simply click here .
