Ocean News & Jobs for May 3

I'm Giacomo Abrusci, your mussel-y ocean guide and Founder of SEVENSEAS Media, an organization committed to marine conservation through education, awareness, and action. See below for this week's round-up of what's new and what is coming up.

Just like everyone has been saying, now it is official, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has confirmed the onset of the fourth global mass coral bleaching event, triggered by record ocean heat, impacting coral worldwide including the Great Barrier Reef and causing extensive decay. Despite appearing beautiful from afar, the bleaching signifies severe stress and potential death for the coral, which is vital for sustaining ocean life and generating significant economic revenue. You can read more about it here .

NEWS ? REPORTS ? ANNOUNCEMENTS

New Report: Vast Majority of Great Lakes Litter is Plastic 86% of litter collected on Great Lakes beaches is composed either partially or fully of plastic, according to a new report released by the Alliance for the Great Lakes. The report is based on 20 years of data collected from more than 14,000 Adopt-a-Beach cleanups on all five Great Lakes. The new analysis details the most common types of plastic items found on Great Lakes shorelines and outlines potential solutions to reduce plastic pollution. In the environment, plastics never go away. Instead, they break down into toxic microplastic particles that make their way into the Great Lakes, a source of drinking water for 40 million people. Greenpeace USA Urges Unprecedented CBP Action Against Bumble Bee Tuna, Other Entities Over Forced Labor Allegations in Seafood Supply Chain Today, Greenpeace USA issued an unprecedented call on U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) to impose public penalties on all entities, including Bumble Bee Tuna, that were involved in the importation of tuna from the Da Wang, a fishing vessel previously sanctioned by CBP for its use of forced labor. ?The request, which comes on International Workers’ Day and on the eve of World Tuna Day, is being made in line with U.S. law (19 U.S. Code § 1595a(b)), which prohibits goods produced with forced labor regardless of the presence of a Withhold Release Order (WRO) or Finding, from entering the U.S., and in line with previously issued penalties. U.S. Plan to Protect Oceans Has a Problem, Some Say: Too Much Fishing New details of the Biden administration’s signature conservation effort, made public this month amid a burst of other environmental announcements, have alarmed some scientists who study marine protected areas because the plan would count certain commercial fishing zones as conserved.?The decision could have ripple effects around the world as nations work toward fulfilling a broader global commitment to safeguard 30 percent of the entire planet’s land, inland waters and seas. That effort has been hailed as historic, but the critical question of what, exactly, counts as conserved is still being decided. Read more...
