I'm Giacomo Abrusci, your mussel-y ocean guide and Founder of SEVENSEAS Media, an organization committed to marine conservation through education, awareness, and action. See below for this week's round-up of what's new and what is coming up.
In recent ocean news, this is a total snooze and I keep rolling my eyes, but great research from CSIRO and the University of Toronto in Canada. The science is fab but I'm over the effing topic right now because nothing is changing. The study by CSIRO and the University of Toronto has revealed that the ocean floor is a significant repository for plastic pollution (surprise!), with an estimated 3 to 11 million metric tons of plastic currently resting on the seabed. This research, the first of its kind to estimate the quantity of plastic waste on the ocean floor, highlights the ocean's depths as a final sink for the plastic entering our oceans, which accumulates and integrates into the marine sediment. Utilizing data from remote operated vehicles (ROVs) and bottom trawls, the study found that plastic pollution clusters around continents and spans from shallow regions above 200 m depth to the deep ocean, up to 11,000 m. This accumulation could be up to 100 times more than the plastic floating on the ocean's surface, underscoring the urgent need for blah blah blah, you know already. Scroll down for jobs and newsletter stuff.
Happy Friday,

Why Do Whales Go Through Menopause? Menopause is all too familiar to women, but in other species, it’s remarkably rare. Last year, scientists reported that females in a single population of chimpanzees live long past their reproductive years. But aside from chimps and humans, researchers have found clear evidence of menopause in only five species — all of them whales. Scientists have long debated why menopause evolved. Perhaps it provided an evolutionary edge to females, or maybe it was a side effect of some other beneficial feature of their lives. Read more...
All Orcas Are Classified as a Single Species. Should They Be? Killer whales are some of the most cosmopolitan creatures on the planet, swimming through every one of the world’s oceans. They patrol the frigid waters near both poles and periodically pop up in the tropics, in locations from western Africa to Hawaii. ?Although their habitats and habits vary widely, all killer whales are considered part of a single, global species: Orcinus orca. (Despite their common name, killer whales are actually part of a family of marine mammals known as oceanic dolphins.) Read more...
