Ocean News & Jobs - 29 March

I'm Giacomo Abrusci, your mussel-y ocean guide and Founder of SEVENSEAS Media, an organization committed to marine conservation through education, awareness, and action. See below for this week's round-up of what's new and what is coming up.

In recent ocean news, The SeaRover project, funded by the EU, aimed to protect Ireland's marine ecosystems from the impacts of increased fishing activities by exploring the depths of Ireland's oceans. Using a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) in its initial phase, scientists made significant discoveries, including new coral species and rare sponge reefs, and even identified a shark nursery off Ireland's coast. Supported by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), the project highlighted the importance of international collaboration in marine research and contributed to conservation efforts by providing extensive, publicly accessible datasets to inform future marine management and conservation policies. SeaRover's outreach programs have also engaged the public and schools, enhancing understanding of Ireland's marine biodiversity and ensuring ongoing exploration and conservation efforts through training for young scientists, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring and protection of these delicate habitats. You can learn more and see great photos here.

At SEVENSEAS Media, we hope to bring you the latest and most impactful stories from the marine world. Please reach out if you'd like to contribute to this newsletter or publish an article at sevenseasmedia.org

Happy Friday & Happy Swimming,

Washington’s Aquatic Reserves Program StoryMap Collection Highlights Community Science Data Local communities play an essential role in stewarding Washington’s eight aquatic reserves. In several reserves, long-term monitoring conducted by community scientists helps us understand key species and habitats that exist on each reserve. As a method for fostering engagement with the data they collect, the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Aquatic Reserves program initiated an ArcGIS StoryMap Collection. Included in the StoryMaps are interactive dashboards where users can interface with the data and choose how to visualize results. By providing community scientists with a platform to explore the results of their efforts, DNR hopes to increase understanding of these habitats and create stronger and longer-lived partnerships. Intended to be ‘living documents’, the goal is to periodically update each StoryMap and expand the collection to include other research and monitoring efforts across the reserves. The StoryMap Collection has proven to be a useful tool for data sharing and community engagement since it was first published in June 2022, and it remains a living connection with updates and additions planned in 2024.

Funding Opportunity FFO-2025 - Long-Term Trends in the Gulf of Mexico Ecosystem Attention researchers and natural resource managers! NOAA is excited to announce the availability of $17.5 million in funding to support the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem. This initiative aims to support projects focused on understanding the trends and variability of natural resources in the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem. We are seeking proposals that investigate the impacts of climate change, water quality and quantity, and fish, fisheries, and fishing communities on the region's biodiversity. Additionally, projects outside of these areas of emphasis will be considered if sufficiently justified. Successful applicants will have the opportunity for up to five years of funding, with the potential for renewal. Key dates include public webinars on March 29 and April 11 for an overview of the competition, with letters of intent due by May 23, 2024, and full proposals by August 22, 2024. Join us in advancing our understanding and management of this vital ecosystem. More info...

They Save Baby Seals From Fishing Line and Plastics. Millions Watch A group of men sprints across a windswept beach, holding what look like outsize butterfly nets, and close in on a colony of seals trying to escape into the sea. The pursuers wrestle with their quarry: Seals entangled by fishing gear and other maritime garbage, whose fortunes are about to be reversed. As one man pins down a panicked animal, another cuts away the plastic deeply embedded in its neck. The chase ends with a freed seal triumphantly returning to the ocean.?Read more...
