Join a Dolphin Ecology & Marine Conservation Field Course in Sardinia. Are you passionate about marine conservation and ready to make an impact? Spend two weeks along the stunning Sardinian coast studying wild bottlenose dolphins, assessing human impacts on marine ecosystems, and contributing to real-world conservation efforts. The Dolphin Ecology & Marine Conservation Field Course, hosted by the Institute for Field Research (IFR) and MareTerra, offers an immersive research experience where you’ll work alongside marine scientists to monitor dolphin behavior, collect bioacoustic data, and help identify strategies for sustainable tourism and fisheries management within the Capo Caccia MPA. This is your chance to gain hands-on field experience, build conservation research skills, and be part of efforts to protect one of the Mediterranean’s most vibrant marine ecosystems. Applications are OPEN NOW through April 1 or until the program is filled—don’t wait! Apply now and join us in Sardinia this summer! [Learn more & apply]
Catastrophic bleaching in protected reefs of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. A new study by Byrne et al. (2025) published in Limnology and Oceanography Letters reveals the devastating impact of the 2024 marine heatwave on the protected reefs of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. The study, which tracked the health of 462 coral colonies at One Tree Reef over 161 days, found that 80% of the colonies bleached by April 2024, and 52% were dead by July. The researchers found that even protected status and offshore location did not shield the reef from the heat stress, leading to rapid bleaching, disease onset, and mortality in diverse corals, including those previously considered resilient. The findings highlight the urgent need for global action to mitigate the impacts of climate change on coral reefs. [Read more]
Giant Caribbean Sea Anemones Found to Prey on Jellyfish. A surprising predator-prey interaction in the marine world: the giant Caribbean sea anemone, Condylactis gigantea, has been observed capturing and consuming two species of jellyfish, Cassiopea sp. and Aurelia sp. ?This discovery, reported by Morejón-Arrojo et al. (2025) in the journal Diversity, challenges the traditional understanding of sea anemone feeding habits, which were previously thought to be limited to smaller organisms. The findings were made possible through observations on citizen science platforms and field recordings, highlighting the valuable contribution of citizen science in capturing rare ecological interactions. This novel feeding behavior not only expands the known diet of C. gigantea but also suggests a potential mechanism for energy transfer between the benthic (bottom-dwelling) and pelagic (open water) zones in marine ecosystems. The researchers emphasize the need for further investigation into the role of sea anemones as predators in marine food webs, particularly in light of the increasing prevalence of jellyfish blooms due to climate change and eutrophication.
